DOE Schedules Meeting on Hanford Waste Storage Tunnel

By Staff Reports

The public meeting promised by the Department of Energy on the structural integrity of the Hanford Site’s PUREX Tunnel No. 2 has been set for 6 p.m. July 20., at the Courtyard by Marriott, 480 Columbia Point Drive in Richland, Wash. The workshop will be webcast. Registration information can be found here.

DOE and the Washington state Department of Ecology will provide information and answer questions, but no formal comment period is planned. In May, the older of two tunnels storing radioactive waste at the PUREX processing plant (Tunnel No. 1) was discovered to be partially collapsed. A state-mandated evaluation of the second, longer waste storage tunnel at the plant found it also is at serious risk of a cave-in.
