Expressions of interest sought for Hanford’s West Area Tank work

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy’s liquid waste contractor at the Hanford Site in Richland, Wash., is inviting expressions of interest (EOI) for vendors interested in the West Area Tank Farms Risk Management (WARM) construction services work.

“WARM is being constructed to supply material for off-site treatment and disposal, supporting compliance with regulatory milestones,” according to the EOI notice posted Tuesday June 2 on the online procurement website, SAM.gov.

This construction project will support the BWXT-led Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) prime contract with DOE, according to the notice.

Responses are due Aug. 13. The contact person for the contract is Claudia Carson, Claudia_A_Carson@rl.gov.

A request for proposals could be issued as early as November of this year, according to material accompanying the notice.

The Hanford Site was once a major producer of plutonium for the national defense program and today underground tanks at the site contain roughly 54 million gallons of waste, “consisting of solids (sludge), liquids (supernate), and saltcake (salts formed through evaporation processes),” according to the document.

The DOE mission-need statement for the project “recognizes the operational sequencing challenges at Hanford, with the lack of waste pretreatment and transfer capabilities in the 200 West Area,” according to the procurement material.

“Vertical, shored excavation of a vault (estimated to be 60’ x 40 and 50 feet deep)for installation of a below-grade steel waste storage tank,”would be one of the key tasks according to the procurement material.
