First DOE data center announcement sought within 90 days

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy could announce the first site for a data center to support artificial intelligence, which would be located on one of its federal installations, within 90 days, according to one of the nuclear executive orders Friday from President Donald Trump.

Nuclear and non-nuclear support structures for such data centers on DOE installations would be deemed “defense critical electric infrastructure,” according to the order on deploying advanced nuclear technology for national security.

Artificial intelligence and advanced computers at DOE facilities or military sites “cannot be disrupted by external threats or grid failures.” Even before Friday’s orders, the administration has said it wants to use small modular reactors to power the data centers at federal sites.

A request for information issued in April for potential data center development on DOE sites, generated a couple of hundred responses, DOE has said.
