Holtec International said last week it was selected to power the Green River Advanced Nuclear Project in Emery County, Utah,
Holtec will construct its SMR-300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Emery County under Gov. Spencer Cox’s (R) state initiative Operation Gigawatt to double energy production within 10 years.
The company’s SMR-300 is a pressurized water reactor designed to produce 340 megawatts of electricity, in a May 28 press release.
The Green River site has undergone environmental and technical analysis including weather, seismic, and groundwater studies, Holtec said in the release, adding the property also has existing water rights, access to the Union Pacific railway, proximity to I-70 and electric power lines.
The company is currently working on deploying two of its SMRs at the Palisades Nuclear Plant site in Covert Township, Mich.
“With Holtec’s restart of Palisades Nuclear plant in Michigan ongoing, and the first Holtec SMR-300s, Pioneer 1 & 2, in the NRC licensing process and early site preparation, the work by our partners to acquire sites for next-of-kind deployment in Utah is paramount to our Mountain West expansion strategy as part of Operation Gigawatt,” Holtec President Rick Springman said
The Utah project must still win necessary government licenses, Holtec said. Hyundai Engineering and Construction will also help with this project following certain project development milestones and funding arrangements, according to the release.
Holtec will also support the ongoing Brigham City project that could set the stage for the company to install its SMR-300s across Utah. Cox announced that Brigham City would be a host city for SMRs and manufacturing and training facilities in November 2025.
