IAEA: drone strike hits Zaporizhzhia laboratory

By ExchangeMonitor

A drone strike targeted infrastructure at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on May 3, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The IAEA said on X Sunday the drone hit an external radiation control laboratory located outside the plant’s main perimeter. No injuries were reported, and the extent of damage remains unclear pending access to the site by agency personnel stationed at the facility.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated on X that military activity in proximity to nuclear facilities continues to present a significant safety hazard, warning that even limited strikes on auxiliary infrastructure can complicate monitoring and emergency response capabilities.

The incident adds to a series of recent disruptions at the site, including repeated losses of off-site power and prior drone-related incidents

Although the plant’s reactors remain in shutdown, external power and monitoring systems are critical to maintaining cooling and preventing a radiological release.
