The Department of Energy’s Office of Legacy Management (LM) said this week it has promoted both a scientist and engineer to new positions.

In a Monday press release, LM reported that Physical Scientist Nicole Olin has been promoted to LM’s team lead for LM-25, which includes Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality programs The safety and health programs ensure everything from monitoring to maintenance are done properly and in compliance with government standards, LM said.

Olin was LM’s first dedicated program manager for the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act Title II and has worked in Legacy Management roles since 2020.

In addition, LM has promoted Kate Whysner to lead LM’s Environmental Team 2, which includes sites regulated under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (Superfund) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

Whysner’s promotion from supervisory general engineer to her new post was announced by Legacy Management in a Tuesday press release. The team Whysner will now head up also manages LM’s Defense Decontamination and Decommissioning and site transition programs.

President Donald Trump’s administration has requested $200 million for the Office of Legacy Management during fiscal 2027, which starts Oct. 1. That would be 1% more than the amount enacted by Congress for fiscal 2026.

The sites assigned to Legacy Management have already been remediated and wastes have already been contained by entities such as DOE’s Office of Environmental Management. Nevertheless, even after cleanup, it is not uncommon for sites to retain some amount of residual contamination that requires oversight, according to the release.
