Building 9107, an office building at the Y-12 National Security Complex, was demolished in July as part of the site infrastructure and services subproject for the new Uranium Processing Facility, the National Nuclear Security Administration confirmed this week. Agency spokeswoman Shelley Laver said in an email on Wednesday that an unidentified Bechtel subcontractor for the UPF project performed the demolition. Along with office space, the 11,000-square-foot building had housed the NNSA Office of Secure Transportation’s (OST’s) Eastern Command from the structure’s 1979 inception to 2006, when the command moved adjacent to an OST vehicle maintenance facility west of Y-12. And at least at one point, Building 9107 facilities included storage lockers and weight training and exercise facilities, according to a 1999 Energy Department Accident Investigation Board report. NNSA did not reveal the exact purpose for the Building 9107 demolition.
Bechtel did not immediately respond yesterday to a question about which subcontractor performed the demolition, but the Army Corps of Engineers in June awarded a $5.89 million contract to Emerald-A&H Joint Venture for site infrastructure and services at UPF, which included the excavation of a hillside close to Building 9107.
