A senior Navy official is likely to lead U.S. Strategic Command for the first time since 2004. President Obama yesterday nominated Adm. Cecil Haney to take over for Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler, who has headed up StratCom since January 2011. If he is confirmed by the Senate, Haney would be the first Navy leader of StratCom since Adm. James Ellis led the command from 2002 to 2004. Haney, a graduate of the Naval Academy, has served as the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet for the last two years, but gained familiarity with StratCom during a stint as its deputy commander during 2011. He commanded Submarine Squadron 1 from 2002 to 2004, and Submarine Group 2 from 2006 to 2008 and spent time on the USS Hyman G. Rickover, the USS Ashville and the USS Honolulu, which he took command of in June 1996. Vice Adm. Harry Harris Jr. will replace Haney, according to the Pentagon. Kehler’s future plans are unknown.
