NNSA, U.K. Hold Maritime Supply Chain Security Workshop

By ExchangeMonitor
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) last week said it joined with the United Kingdom’s Department of Energy and Climate Change to conduct a global maritime supply chain security workshop. The workshop, held in the U.K., featured "best practices for deterring, detecting, and responding to trafficking of nuclear and radiological material that could be acquired by terrorists through the maritime shipping system," the NNSA said. Recommendations from the workshop — which included 55 participants from 15 countries and nine international organizations, according to the NNSA — will be incorporated into the upcoming 2016 Nuclear Security Summit. The NNSA’s Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) program supports these activities by "providing partners with the expertise and tools needed to detect and respond to trafficking events," the agency said. By the end of fiscal 2015 NSDD has equipped over 140 seaports with radiation detection equipment.
