No Word Yet on Status of Portsmouth Cleanup Contract

By ExchangeMonitor

There was no word Tuesday from either the Energy Department or Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth on any sort of extension for the contractor’s current deal for cleanup of the Portsmouth Site in Ohio.

The first of two potential 30-month option periods for the contract is set to expire Sept. 30.

The company started work on its potential 10-year decommissioning and decontamination award for the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant on March 28, 2011. After a five-year base period, DOE extended the contractor for a 30-month option period.

The parties could not be reached for comment, although one industry source outside of Fluor and BWXT noted the Energy Department often issues temporary extensions at the 11th hour.

As part of its contract, Fluor-BWXT is responsible for the decontamination and decommissioning of roughly 415 structures that supported uranium enrichment at the Piketon, Ohio site.
