The Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week allowed a new Exelon spin-off company to take ownership of over a dozen current and former nuclear power plants currently owned by the utility, according to a press release.
As part of Exelon’s corporate restructuring, a currently-unnamed holding company will assume control of the utility’s 17 nuclear sites, NRC said in the Wednesday release. The plants will be operated by an Exelon spin-off company, also unnamed, the release said.
Four decommissioning sites are among the nuclear plants now under the spin-off’s ownership: Dresden and Zion in Illinois; and Peach Bottom and Three Mile Island Unit 1 in Pennsylvania.
Exelon plans to split into two companies by the first quarter of 2022 — one to handle its regulated electricity and gas utilities, and the other overseeing its nuclear, wind, solar, hydroelectric and natural gas businesses. The company first announced the split in February.
