NRC considers approach to regulatory overhaul

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a hybrid informational meeting March 12 at  2 p.m. Eastern Time to discuss the agency’s approach to revising its regulations and oversight processes.

The March 12 meeting will be held at NRC  headquarters in Rockville, Md. and can be viewed via Microsoft Teams. It will also have a question and answer session, according to its meeting announcement

The wholesale revision of its regulations was ordered by President Donald Trump administration’s May 23, 2025, executive order, Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The overhaul is supposed to be completed within 18 months of the order. 

 

NRC said in a Feb. 2 Facebook post it plans to have its final rulesi in place  by November.

The executive action called for the agency to make a number of changes within 18 months,  including wide-ranging changes to its regulations, NRC reorganization and nuclear licensing actions.

“I could not be more impressed with the risk-informed, data-driven, innovative proposals our staff have generated,” NRC Executive Director of Operations Mike King said in theFeb. 26 press release. “We are looking forward to discussing the improvements that are underway and previewing the upcoming opportunities to interact on rulemakings that will be going out for public comment in the coming weeks.”
