NRG PALLAS agrees to test fuel for Kairos Power SMR fleet

By ExchangeMonitor

NRG PALLAS, a research institute based in the Netherlands, has partnered with California-based Kairos Power to evaluate the fuel Kairos’plans to use in small modular reactors.

NRG PALLAS announced  the agreement in a March 20 news release.

In October 2024, Kairos Power reached an agreement with Google that will allow the company to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) to power Google’s data centers. Kairos intends to have its first SMR deployed by 2030, with more to follow by 2035.

The Kairos Power SMRs deal with Google is expected to produce up to 500 megawatts of new carbon free power.

NRG PALLAS and Kairos Power have previously made several agreements over the years, as NRG agreed to perform irradiation and qualification tests of fuels and materials to support the Kairos Power fluoride salt-cooled, high temperature reactor (KP-FHR) commercial program, as stated in the news release.

In 2023, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a construction permit for Kairos’s Hermes demonstration test reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Hermes reactor design is a 35 MW that will support the company’s reactor technology.
