Ohio Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown sent a letter to Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz Friday requesting a meeting to discuss USEC’s American Centrifuge Project. The future of the southern Ohio project remains uncertain, as USEC has said that it can’t fund it without government support. The omnibus appropriations bill Congress passed last month provided $62 million for a DOE program supporting ACP, with an additional $56 million contingent on the results of a DOE cost-benefit analysis.
The Senators wrote in Friday’s letter: “We would like to meet with you to receive an update on the current progress of the ACP RD&D project, discuss the future of the project, and understand how we can help DOE’s efforts to develop this capability,” adding “Given the continuing need to replenish tritium to maintain the U.S. nuclear arsenal, we believe that ACP is too important to our nation’s national and energy security and too important to fail now.”
