Plenty of nuclear amendments proposed for House 2027 energy & water bill

As of Monday afternoon, it appears no date has been set for the full House of Representatives to take up the House Appropriations Committee version of the fiscal 2027 Energy & Water Development bill, which was considered by the House Rules Committee last week.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) who chairs the House Appropriations Energy & Water Subcommittee, had hoped the measure would be taken up last week. The fiscal 2027 appropriations bill passed out of the Appropriations Committee in May.

Many amendments that could affect nuclear issues were proposed June 23 during the Rules Committee hearing and many of them were proposed by members of the Democratic minority.

Here is a look at some of the amendments proposed to the funding bill:

  • A measure to reverse the termination of many Department of Energy and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ projects was proposed by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio).
  • There is a bipartisan proposal to transfer $10 million from DOE administration to DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy to support advanced fuels for advanced university research reactors.
  • An amendment by Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) that would prohibit funds from the bill being used to carry out reductions in force.
  • An amendment that seeks to speed cleanup of certain defense nuclear sites was proposed by Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.).
  • A group of Nevada Democrats sought to ensure the safety and reliability of the national nuclear weapons stockpile “without explosive testing.”
  • A measure to add $11.5 million for the Army Corps’ Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) by Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) The money would be taken from Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy funds.
  • A measure to restore $3 million to the anti-proliferation program at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), proposed by Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.) and Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas).
  • An amendment to support cleanup and containment efforts for the hexavalent chromium plume at the Los Alamos National Laboratory was proposed by Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.).
