Preview: Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Cleanup

Two panels today will address the ongoing remediation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in the wake of the March 2011 meltdown.

The first session, “Cleanup of Fukushima NPP – D&D and Waste Management – is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to noon in Room 102BC. It will focus on the decommissioning plan for Fukushima and on foreign assistance for this work. The speakers will be: Mamoru Numata, Special Adviser to Executive Directors, NDF; Kazuhiro Suzuki, Managing Director, NDF; Paul Dickman, Senior Policy Fellow, Argonne National Laboratory; Colin Austin, Senior Vice President for Energy Solutions, EnergySolutions; John Raymont, Founder and Vice Chairman, Kurion; Travis Barker, Chief Technical Officer and Principal Engineer, AVANTech Inc.; and Mayur Jagatia, Director for Business Development, Amec Foster Wheeler.

The second panel, “Fukushima Daiichi NPP – Focus on Offsite Cleanup and International Collaboration,” is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 102BC. Along with Numata, speakers will be: Hidetoshi Kuramochi, Section Head, Center for Material Cycles and Waste Management Research, National Institute for Environmental Studies; Takahiro Nakanishi, Assistant Principal, Fukushima Environmental Safety Center of JAEA; Masamichi Obata, Chief Specialist, Toshiba Corp.; Steve Rima, Vice President, Radiological Services and Engineering, Amec Foster Wheeler; Yoshiharu Hashizume, General Manager, Obayashi Corp.; and Jeff Griffin, Associate Laboratory Director – Environmental and Chemical Process Tech, Savannah River National Laboratory.
