Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division has won a $56 million Navy contract to provide engineering and design support for the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program, the company said Oct. 13.
The contract includes an option that would increase its cumulative value to $91 million if exercised, HII said in a press release.
AUKUS is the trilateral framework between the U.S., Australia and the United Kingdom to supply nuclear-powered submarines and other nuclear information and technologies to Australia.
Under the Foreign Military Sales portion of the award, Newport News Shipbuilding will continue providing support to the United Kingdom and Australia in areas including technology insertion, engineering, supply chain and workforce development, and digital transformation.
The contract also covers the United States Industry Support effort, under which Newport News engineers and designers will support development of the SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered attack submarine that will be built by the U.K. and Australia, the release said.
HII has undergone a growing role in supporting Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine enterprise. HII’s Mission Technologies division in Australia has a contract for the Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification Program, which is intended to identify, develop and qualify Australian suppliers for integration into the U.S. submarine industrial base.
HII is also working with Australian industry and academia on workforce development, including training engineers, maritime specialists, nuclear experts and other personnel needed to support the submarine enterprise.
The company was awarded the Australian Submarine Agency’s Nuclear Capability Advisory Services contract in December 2025 to provide nuclear program management and technical support for Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine programs.
