Round Up: Nano Nuclear plans R&D facility in Illinois; NRC sets meeting for Wolf Creek land transfer; TVA begins scheduled outage for Sequoyah Unit 1; Lightbridge loads capsules for irradiation testing

In a joint agreement with Nano Nuclear, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the nuclear company will construct a manufacturing and research and development facility in Illinois. 

Nano Nuclear plans to “make an investment of more than $12 million with the support from the Reimagining Energy and Vehicles in Illinois (REV Illinois) program, which will enable the company to establish its operations and create 50 new full-time jobs,” according to its Tuesday press release.The project will also receive $6.8 million from the REV program.

In July, Nano Nuclear acquired a 23,537-square foot demonstration and office facility to support the development of its KRONOS microreactor energy system in Oak Brook, Ill. 

 

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has scheduled a public meeting Oct. 15 to take comments on Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation’s proposal to release a tract of land at its plant site in Burlington, Kansas.

Wolf Creek seeks approval to donate 4.46 acres of land under its NRC reactor license to a privately-owned cemetery, the Stringtown Cemetery Board, according to its Aug. 26 request letter to NRC.

The NRC meeting is planned at New Strawn Fire Station, 301 W Lake Road, New Strawn, Kan. from 7 p.m.  to 8 p.m. Central Time. As of Wednesday, the meeting is still scheduled despite the ongoing government shutdown, according to the NRC website.

 

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has undergone its scheduled refueling and maintenance outage for Sequoyah Nuclear Plant Unit 1 in Soddy-Daisy, Tenn. in October. 

TVA will load 72 new nuclear fuel assemblies and perform key maintenance activities that can only be done safely with the unit offline, according to TVA’s Monday press release. The scheduled outage for Sequoyah Unit 1 began on the evening of Oct. 3.

 

Lightbridge announced Thursday it has completed the loading of capsules containing Lightbridge Fuel material samples made of enriched uranium-zirconium alloy into an experiment assembly. 

The experiment assembly is prepared for insertion into the Advanced Test Reactor for irradiation testing, which is expected to begin later this year, according to the Lightbridge Thursday press release

The Lightbridge Fuel samples of uranium-zicronium alloy were recently tested at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory, the company said.
