NextEra has acquired the remaining 30% minority stake in its Duane Arnold Energy Center as the sole Iowa nuclear power plant prepares to come back online by 2029, the utility said July 24.
According to NextEra’s second quarter 2026 financial results press release, the utility bought the remaining minority stake from two companies, Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative. This transaction makes NextEra Resources, NextEra’s subsidiary, the sole owner of Duane Arnold.
Sole ownership of the Duane Arnold is notable as NextEra and Dominion Energy continue to transverse its merger acquisition, in which Dominion will be added to NextEra. In this proposed merger, which applications for regulatory approvals were filed on July 15, NextEra shareholders will own 74.5% of the company, while Dominion shareholders will own 25.5% of it.
Terrestrial Energy has added two long-time nuclear industry members to high-level roles this week.
Terrestrial Energy hired Pamela Cowan to be its executive vice president of engineering, effective immediately on Thursday. Cowan has over 30 years of experience in the industry, previously serving in executive roles at Westinghouse and Holtec International.
The company also added Kathryn McCarthy, former senior advisor at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), to its board of directors Tuesday. McCarthy had 25-year-plus career history at DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory and recently transitioned to a senior advisor at ORNL this year prior to joining Terrestrial Energy.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host several webinars during the week of Aug. 3 to Aug. 7 going over its recent proposed rulemaking that would make extensive changes to nuclear licensing processes.
NRC will have three webinars, via Microsoft Teams, to provide an overview of the rulemaking followed by a question-and-answer session. The discussions will be hosted by several NRC staff members. The rulemaking, triggered by President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14300, was published on July 16.
The dates and times (all expressed in Eastern Time) are as follows: The first webinar will be held on Aug. 3 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The second will be on Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The third and final one will be Aug. 6 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Details on each webinar were not provided in the meeting’s memo.
