Round-up: Russian nuke torpedos; uranium bust at Heathrow; notable obituaries

Russia has manufactured the nuclear munitions for its Poseidon nuclear torpedo and planned to deliver them soon to a Belgorod-class nuclear submarine, the Russian state news agency TASS reported, media including Reuters reported.

Poseidon torpedoes are meant to create radioactive ocean swells that can wash over and contaminate coastal cities and ports, Moscow has said.

 

United Kingdom metropolitan police on Jan. 15 busted a 60 year-old man who they suspect is connected to a radioactive cargo package discovered at Heathrow Airport on Dec. 29, Reuters reported.

London police did not immediately suspect any direct threat to the public, according to the wire service.

 

Dennis Hayes, 84, a former director of Sandia National Laboratories’ research and development coordination, president of Lockheed Martin Nevada Technologies, consultant to Los Alamos National Laboratory and fellow of the American Physical Society died Jan. 2, according to an obituary published online by a funeral home.

Hayes, of Cedar Crest, N.M., died following a brief illness, according to the obituary

 

James Grundl, 93, a former nuclear physicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, died Dec. 8, according to an obituary published last week by the local Los Alamos Daily Post

Grundl joined the lab in the 1950s, left for what is now the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., in 1969 and retired in the 1990s, according to the obituary. The obituary did not identify the cause of death.
