SCE Expects to Select SONGS Contractor This Summer

By ExchangeMonitor

Southern California Edison expects in June or July to select a prime contractor for decommissioning of its shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station near San Diego, a senior official said last week.

SCE Vice President Tom Palmisano, SONGS decommissioning and chief nuclear officer, said he could not discuss the criteria the utility is using in choosing among the three bidders: Team Holtec, a team led by Bechtel, and an AECOM/EnergySolutions partnership.

Speaking at the 2016 Waste Management Conference in Phoenix, Palmisano reaffirmed SCE’s stance that the plant’s decommissioning fund would cover the project’s price tag, which has been estimated at $4.4 billion over two decades. The project would cover Units 2 and 3 at the plant, which were retired in 2013; Unit 1 was retired in 1992 and placed in SAFSTOR.

Palmisano is set to appear at the SONGS Community Engagement Panel’s regular meeting on at 6 p.m. March 24 in Oceanside. Palmisano will give a decommissioning progress report, which will be followed by a San Onofre review process presentation by Linda Anabtawi, senior attorney for SCE.
