The chairman of the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday introduced a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government for five days beyond the Dec. 11 expiration of the current CR.
The newly introduced bill maintains government funding at the fiscal 2015 funding levels of the current CR – passed at the end of September to avoid a government shutdown – and will give Congress several more days to pass an omnibus spending bill for fiscal 2016. During the CR period the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) remained funded at its fiscal 2015 level, which included $8.23 billion for the agency’s weapons programs for the full year.
“This short-term funding resolution will keep the lights on in government and maintain current operations for a few days so Congress can complete and pass an agreement,” committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said in a statement. “It is my hope and expectation that a final, year-long bill will be enacted before this new deadline.” If passed in both the House and Senate and signed by President Barack Obama by midnight tonight, the new CR will maintain government funding until it expires at midnight on Dec. 16.
