The Department of Energy intends to keep Fluor-led Savannah River Nuclear Solutions as management and operations contractor of the Savannah River Site in South Carolina for up to five more years, the agency said in a procurement notice Monday.
The agency said on the SAM.gov procurement website it plans to extend the period of performance for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) for at least four more years, with a one-year option that could keep the company in charge of the federal complex through Sept. 30, 2027.
The planned long-term extension would buy time for DOE’s Office of Environmental Management, the current site landlord, to continue talks with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) over which entity will oversee the complex in the future. In November 2021, DOE announced it was indefinitely delaying a planned request for proposals at Savannah River Site, which will be the home of the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility for NNSA.
There were no dollar figures listed in the latest posting, which is a notice of intent rather than a final action.
In addition to Fluor, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions also includes Newport News Nuclear and Honeywell. The team has operated the Savannah River Site near the South Carolina-Georgia line since August 2008 under a contract now valued at $16.7 billion, according to a DOE Office of Environmental Management chart of major contracts.
Without an extension the current business would expire Sept. 30 of this year. During the Waste Management Symposia last month in Phoenix, Dae Chung, who heads corporate services for Environmental Management, said the office was working on details for an extension of the SRNS contract.
