The Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina said June 17 it has removed waste from two more radioactive waste tanks at the 310-square-mile facility near the Georgia state line.
Tanks 11 and 15 are the fourth and fifth waste tanks in 12 months to meet the “preliminary cease waste removal” designation, DOE’s Office of Environmental Management said in a blog posted on its website. The designation marks agreement between DOE, the state of South Carolina and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that it appears removal has been completed.
The designation also marks the start of the sampling and analysis phase for the two tanks, DOE said in the blog. Tanks 11 and 15 have reached this point between seven and 19 months ahead of schedule, according to the department. The tanks are located in the H Tank Farm at Savannah River.
BWX Technologies-led Savannah River Mission Completion is the environmental prime in charge of liquid waste cleanup at Savannah River. The contractor has a decade-long agreement worth up to $21 billion. DOE has said it expect to finish emptying the tanks in the late 2030s.
