The BWX Technologies-led prime cleanup contractor for the West Valley Demonstration Project near Buffalo, N.Y., is holding an industry day July 30 for vendors that have expressed an interest in the Secant Pile Wall construction project.
West Valley Cleanup Alliance (WVCA) recently issued a request for information (RFI) for subcontractors interested in doing the work at Waste Management Area-A.
Subcontractor registration for the industry day and site tour closed July 16. Industry responses providing feedback to the RFI are due by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Aug. 17, according to the RFI.
The area in question “contains contaminated subsurface structures and soil requiring remediation,” according to the RFI from the Department of Energy contractor. A key part of the work “is the installation of a secant pile containment wall with tieback anchors to support deep excavation and ensure worker and environmental safety during the removal of buried contaminated structures,” according to the RFI.
DOE and West Valley Cleanup Alliance anticipate a subcontractor would eventually be chosen to build a 1,800-foot-long reinforced concrete secant pile wall around the affected area of Waste Management Area-1.
If things go according to plan, WVCA expects to issue an actual request for proposals in the third quarter of 2027, according to the online document.
West Valley is a property owned by New York state. The West Valley Demonstration Project was home to a spent fuel reprocessing plant for six years ending in 1972. WVCA has a 10-year remediation contract with a value of up to $3 billion.
