U.S. and IAEA make headway with Iran in Geneva talks

By ExchangeMonitor

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Geneva, and progress was made on nuclear issues, according to the Iranian government’s website Monday.

According to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Grossi met with Araghchi on behalf of the United Nations nuclear watchdog to discuss Iran’s nuclear safeguards, as well as listen to Iran’s “viewpoints” regarding nuclear negotiations with the United States.

Aragchi also told Iranian media after talks concluded that while “different ideas have been presented, these ideas have been seriously discussed, ultimately we’ve been able to reach a general agreement on some guiding principles.”

In Geneva, Oman’s foreign minister Badr al-Busaidi was a mediator alongside the IAEA between the U.S. and Iran. On X, al-Busaidi said negotiations “concluded with good progress towards identifying common goals and relevant technical issues.”

“The spirit of our meetings was constructive,” al-Busaidi said. “Together we made serious efforts to define a number of guiding principles for a final deal. The contribution of the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi was much appreciated. Much work is yet to be done, and the parties left with clear next steps before the next meeting.”
