U.S., China discuss reciprocal nuclear facilities visits

By ExchangeMonitor

The U.S. and China are discussing reciprocal visits to each other’s nuclear facilities, a potential transparency measure as Washington raises concerns about Beijing’s nuclear activities.

The Donald Trump administration has held talks with Chinese officials about allowing each country to visit nuclear facilities operated by the other, the Washington Times reported Oct. 8, citing U.S. officials.

The discussions come as the United States has accused China of conducting potentially concerning activities at its nuclear test site, including possible preparations that could support a resumption of nuclear testing.

Currently, the scope and timing of any visits remain unclear. The talks also come amid broader U.S.-China efforts to maintain military and strategic communications. Officials have increasingly emphasized the need for transparency and dialogue as China expands its nuclear arsenal and modernizes its nuclear forces. Both countries have also recently reaffirmed a “constructive relationship of strategic stability” at Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit in September to Washington.
