Waste Management Symposium Set for Next Week

By ExchangeMonitor

With key Energy Department officials yet to be officially instilled by the new Donald Trump administration, the 2017 Waste Management Symposium kicks off next Monday, March 6, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Sue Cange — a weapons complex veteran who is now the acting assistant energy secretary for environmental management — is on the bill to speak at the nuclear-cleanup sector’s big spring meeting, even as the industry taps its foot for the U.S. Senate to confirm former Texas Gov. Rick Perry as secretary of energy and clear the way for the Trump administration to appoint a permanent head of the Office of Environmental Management (EM).

The symposium, again to be held at the Phoenix Convention Center, is slated to get underway Monday after the traditional pre-conference golf tournament March 5 at the nearby Raven Golf Club.

Meanwhile, former Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) Chairman and current DNFSB member Joyce Connery is the invited speaker for the keynote slot at the conference’s day-one luncheon March 6.

On March 7, the Women in Nuclear industry trade group is again co-hosting its annual discussion panel and networking reception with the Waste Management Symposia. Among the speakers on that panel is Candice Trummell, associate principal deputy assistant secretary of corporate services in DOE EM.

While the conference wraps up on March 9, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is set to meet at the conference site on Friday, March 10, for a public meeting on its low-level waste regulatory program.
