Waste Control Specialists announced yesterday that it has been awarded a contract to dispose of low-level radioactive waste from the Separations Process Research Unit (SPRU) at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna, N.Y. The contract, awarded by URS Energy and Construction, the prime contractor at the Department of Energy site, calls for the transportation, treatment and disposal of low-level waste produced from the SPRU cleanup. “We are excited to support URS on this project,” WCS President Rod Baltzer said in a statement. “WCS has the broadest range of disposal capabilities in the industry. Our business approach is to provide the customer with maximum flexibility at the lowest project risk and cost. We expect to focus on these same objectives for large scale decommissioning projects in the future.” WCS expects the majority of the waste to fall under the Class A distinction, the company said.
