WIPP Ventilation Upgrades Wrapped Up, Entries to Resume

By ExchangeMonitor
Filter replacements at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant were completed this week, paving the way for the first reentry into the repository’s underground since May 30, when upgrades to the ventilation system began. The ventilation upgrades that shut down the underground for several weeks were part of the recovery effort following the February fire and radiation release at the facility. “WIPP personnel are now able to make entries focused on performing ground control activities to maintain mine safety. Later entries will return focus to investigating the radiological event that occurred in the underground facility in February,” DOE said in a release yesterday.
