Wrap up: Fifth Iran talk ‘constructive’; Trump EO includes nuclear-supported data center; SASC member will not seek reelection

By ExchangeMonitor

A state department spokesperson said Tuesday that the fifth round of talks in Rome between the U.S. and Iran May 23 on a nuclear deal was “constructive.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi still maintains there is “no room for compromise” on keeping enrichment in Iran, he told Iranian state media after the fourth round of talks. However, he told state television after this past round that it was “one of the most professional rounds of talks” that now puts Tehran “on a reasonable path.”

The Department of Energy could announce the first site for a data center to support artificial intelligence, which would be located on one of its federal installations, within 90 days, according to one of the nuclear executive orders May 23 from President Donald Trump.

Nuclear and non-nuclear support structures for such data centers on DOE installations would be deemed “defense critical electric infrastructure,” according to the order on deploying advanced nuclear technology for national security.

Artificial intelligence and advanced computers at DOE facilities or military sites “cannot be disrupted by external threats or grid failures.” Even before last week’s orders, the administration has said it wants to use small modular reactors to power the data centers at federal sites. A request for information issued in April for potential data center development on DOE sites, generated a couple of hundred responses, DOE has said.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), a member of the Armed Services Committee (SASC) elected in 2020, announced plans Tuesday to run for governor of Alabama in 2026.

Tuberville’s confirmation that he would not seek reelection to the Senate followed several months of speculation over his political future, and will likely set up a competitive, open GOP primary for his Alabama seat.

“Today, I will announce that I will be the future governor of the great state of Alabama,” Tuberville, 70, said in a Fox News interview. “I’ve still got 18 months to go with President Trump to make America great again. We’ve got a lot of work to do…But I’m doing this to help this country and the great state of Alabama.”
