Wrap Up: Fitzsimmons becomes DOE staff chief; waste board member confirms resignation request; more

By ExchangeMonitor

Alex Fitzsimmons, who previously held executive jobs at the Department of Energy and the private sector has been appointed DOE chief of staff under Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.

Fitzsimmons announced his chief of staff job last week on his LinkedIn page and introduced Wright Wednesday morning when the energy secretary gave his first address to DOE staff in Washington, D.C. During the first Donald Trump administration, Fitzsimmons was chief of staff for DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. He also served as deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency.

During the Joe Biden presidency, Fitzsimmons held jobs as head of government affairs for Sila Nanotechnologies . He also served as a senior director for renewable energy and energy storage at Clear Path, according to his online bio.

A member of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB) appointed by the prior administration confirmed late Friday Jan. 31 he was asked to resign by the new Donald Trump White House.

“Yes, I received an email asking for my resignation by cob [close of business] on January 23, or be terminated from the NWTRB,” Scott Tyler, said in an email response to an inquiry from Exchange Monitor. Tyler is a professor of hydrology (emeritus) at the University of Nevada, Reno

The Monitor previously reported that nearly the entire NWTRB, except for the chair, Peter Swift, was asked to resign or be fired. All members of the board listed on the NWTRB website are Biden appointees. In addition to Swift and Tyler, other members listed on the website are Richelle Allen-King, Ronald Ballinger, Lake Barrett, Miles Greiner, Silvia Jurisson, Nathan Siu, Seth Tuler and Brian Woods. There was already one vacancy, according to the website.

Jeff Neff, a long-retired Department of Energy employee who worked in nuclear fusion, has died in Middletown, Ohio, at age 80, according to an online obituary.

Neff worked at several DOE offices across the nation before retiring from the department in 1995, according to the obituary. After leaving DOE in 1995, Neff subsequently worked for various DOE contractors until retiring from the private sector 10 years ago. He died Jan. 30.

Access Intelligence has appointed Wayne Barber editor of Exchange Monitor Publications. Barber, who has been with the Monitor since 2017, has been writing on nuclear, energy and natural resources issues for four decades. He can be reached at [email protected].

The new editor succeeds Dan Leone. Leone, a veteran journalist who spent nine years at the Monitor, recently left to take a media relations post in the corporate world. Good luck Dan!
