Tom Stiehle, HII’s chief financial officer, said in Huntington Ingalls Industries’ second quarter earnings call the company had done “the initial start of the design work for the [Trump-class] battleship [BBG(X)] as well on a limited basis with support and cooperation with the Navy.”
In May, Jason Potter, then-performing the duties of assistant Navy secretary for research, development and acquisition, told the House Armed Services Seapower subcommittee they believe Dry Dock 12 at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard can be used for final assembly of the battleship program when sequencing it between aircraft carriers.
Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” as a result of a car crash on her way to church, according to a statement released by her office Sunday morning.
News reports, such as the one on Cleveland.com said the wreck resulted from a hit-and-run by a driver who fled the scene. Cleveland.com said Kaptur was in the passenger seat of a black Ford Bronco that was struck by a vehicle believed to be stolen. Toledo police are investigating. The ranking 80-year-old Democrat on the House Appropriations Energy and Water subcommittee “was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck,” according to an Aug. 2 statement by Kaptur’s office staff. The statement went on to say she was “active, alert and being treated” for the injuries.
“Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash,” according to the statement. “She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”
After being out of service about two months to fix problems with underground hoists, the Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) resumed taking shipments of defense-related transuranic waste in July, according to publicly-available data.
According to DOE’s public shipment website for WIPP, a couple of waste shipments from the Los Alamos National Laboratory were received at WIPP near Carlsbad, N.M., on July 16. It marked the first transuranic waste shipment to arrive at WIPP from generator sites since May 26, according to the data. This spring, WIPP management informed the New Mexico Environment Department that the nation’s only underground disposal site for this type of waste needed to suspend burying waste until it could carry out repairs to both the Air Intake Shaft and Salt Handling Shaft hoists.

Republican Kay Granger, who represented the Texas 12th Congressional district and chaired the House Appropriations Committee, has died at age 83, according to news reports from various media outlets Monday morning.
Granger, who before retiring served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than a quarter century, was the first Texas Republican woman elected to the House, CNN reported. Following a series of health problems and missed votes, Granger announced in spring 2024 that she would not be seeking re-election.
“Throughout her career, she broke barriers for women in public services,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R),” said in a statement posted on X. “She was the first woman to serve as mayor of Fort Worth,” in addition to being a trailblazing member of Congress. “She was a dear friend and will be greatly missed.”
