Wrap Up: Y-12 office space sought; NWTRB delays meeting; Ex-VP Cheney dies at age 84

By Staff Reports

Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS), the Bechtel-led contractor team that oversees the Y-12 National Security Complex, is looking at office space near the facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

CNS recently took in expressions of interest (EOI) from potential suppliers of office space located within five to 20 miles of the Y-12 complex at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Site, according to an online procurement notice. CNS said it was looking to lease a building “suitable for overflow office space” in Anderson, Knox or Roane County, Tenn.

This facility will need roughly 30,000-to-60,000 square feet of office space, according to the notice posted on SAM.gov. The building should have adequate parking also, according to the notice. Responses to the expressions of interest solicitation were due Friday, Oct. 31. CNS is interested in a lease with a five-year base period that could be renewed in one-year extensions.

Due to the ongoing government shutdown, the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB) is postponing its Nov. 13 public meeting scheduled for Arlington, Va.

A new date is yet to be determined but it will be after January 2026, a spokesperson for NWTRB said via email Wednesday afternoon. When the new date and venue are determined, NWTRB will post that information to the board’s website and in the Federal Register.

The NWTRB is an independent agency within the executive branch set up to peer review DOE efforts to manage and dispose of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. The board reports its findings to Congress and the secretary of energy.

National news outlets reported early Tuesday that former Vice President Richard (Dick) Cheney has died at age 84.

Raised in Wyoming, Cheney served as vice president to President George W. Bush for eight years after serving in Congress and in high-level positions, including secretary of defense and chief of staff, for various Republican administrations, Fox News reported. Cheney reportedly died Monday from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Cheney, who had a history of heart trouble, underwent a heart transplant in 2012.

The former vice president and Washington insider was considered an influential and controversial figure, having been in office during the 9/11 attacks on the United States and the Iraq war. Cheney is often cited for his role in persuading the George W. Bush White House to invade Iraq in 2003, CNN reported. In later years, Cheney became a vocal critic of a fellow Republican, President Donald Trump. Cheney’s daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), co-chaired a House Committee that held hearings into the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection in the U.S. Capitol.
