BWX Technologies (BWXT) announced Thursday it was awarded a $174 million contract in September to manufacture naval nuclear reactor fuel.
The Lynchburg, Va.-based company’s subsidiary, Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, Tenn. will manufacture and deliver fuel for the Naval Reactors program. Work on the project has already begun with a completion target of summer 2026.
“The U.S. Navy recently celebrated its 250th anniversary, and BWXT is proud to be powering our world-class fleet right now and into the future,” Gary Camper, president for BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group, said in the company’s press release. “The team at NFS demonstrates the level of quality and commitment needed each day to fuel the Navy’s global mission of maintaining freedom and security.”
BWXT’s fuel and reactors power the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-, Virginia-, and Columbia-class submarines, all of which will carry warheads developed by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
BWXT has been on a roll recently, acquiring another contract in September valued at $1.5 billion to design NNSA’s Domestic Uranium Enrichment Centrifuge Experiment (DUECE) pilot plant in Tennessee.
The company has its quarterly earnings call Monday Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
