Defense appropriations and authorizations hearings hit Senate this week

By ExchangeMonitor

The Senate Armed Services Committee and Appropriations Defense Subcommittee will hold hearings this week on defense policy and the defense budget, potentially touching on nuclear matters.

On Monday, the Senate Armed Services Strategic Forces subcommittee was scheduled to mark up its portions of the fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a defense policy bill that also sets spending limits for defense programs, including in the National Nuclear Security Administration. The full Armed Services committee is scheduled to markup the bill on Tuesday and Wednesday. Senate markups of the NDAA are closed to the public and press.

The House Armed Services Committee marked up its version of the fiscal 2027 NDAA last week, and that version of the bill now heads to the House floor.

Also on Tuesday, the Senate Appropriations Defense subcommittee is scheduled to review the fiscal 2027 budget request for the Air Force. The hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Eastern time in Dirksen Senate Office building, room 192.

Witnesses testifying at the hearing include Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, and Air Force Secretary Troy Meink. The Air Force hearing could touch on programs such as the future Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile or the B-21.
