Wright to discuss DOE budget with House Science, Space and Technology committee

By ExchangeMonitor

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright will testify before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee to discuss the Department of Energy’s fiscal 2027 budget request on Wednesday morning.

The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. Eastern Time in Room 2318 in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.

In President Donald Trump’s White House fiscal 2027 budget request, DOE’s Office of Science was offered a $7.14 billion budget, which is a 13% reduction from the fiscal 2026 enacted budget of $8.25 billion. The House’s fiscal 2027 energy and water appropriations bill, which was passed out of committee on May 20, would allocate $8.53 billion to the Office of Science.

The House’s request represents a $275 million increase from fiscal 2026 and $1.39 billion more than the President’s fiscal 2027 budget request, according to the meeting memo. DOE’s Office of Science is responsible for funding several of its national laboratories.

Wright defended the proposed budget cut for the Office of Science at a Senate budget hearing in April, saying that the one billion dollar cut was just funding moved to a separate category named artificial intelligence and quantum, which is proposed $1.2 billion in the White House request.

This hearing will mark Wright’s first time testifying before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, according to the memo
