Hanford area fire burns 1,300 acres before being controlled

By ExchangeMonitor

A Sunday fire near the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington state has been extinguished but not before it burned 1,300 acres, according to a Hanford announcement on Facebook.

“Wind gusts fanned the flames, but the Hanford Fire Department, managed by Hanford Mission Integration Solutions, got it under control within a few hours with help from Richland Fire & Emergency Services, Benton County Fire District #1 & Benton County Fire Protection District #2,” according to the Hanford Site Facebook page.

The fire started by a lightning strike has now been contained, NBCRightnow reported Sunday, citing a DOE spokesperson.

The  “large natural cover fire” started near Route 4 South at Mile Post 12, the Benton County, Wash., Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post on Monday.
