The Nuclear Regulatory Commission accepted Constellation Energy’s subsequent license renewal application for R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, N.Y. for review July 16.
The subsequent license renewal, which comes after an initial license renewal, would extend Ginna’s operating license for another 20 years, from 60 years to 80. Ginna’s current operating license is set to expire in 2029. If approved, then Ginna would be extended to 2049.
With the application accepted for review, NRC filed an acceptance of docketing notice in the Federal Register on Monday. This opens up the opportunity for the public to request a hearing and a petition to intervene. Requests must be submitted by Sept. 18.
Ginna, which was first licensed in 1969 and went into operation in 1970, is a single pressurized water reactor with a generating capacity of 576 megawatts. Ginna is one of the oldest nuclear reactors still operating in the United States, just behind Nine Mile Point in New York.
