OSI Systems Acquires Nuclear Security Company Nucsafe

By Staff Reports

OSI Systems acquired the radiation detection company Nucsafe in a deal that expands its products and customer footprint in the nuclear security market.

Terms of the transaction, which was conducted by OSI’s subsidiary American Science & Engineering, were not disclosed late Tuesday. Nucsafe’s management and development team will remain with the company.

OSI highlighted Nucsafe’s patent portfolio, including “Spatial Sequenced Backscatter Portal,” which is related to the inspection of vehicles and other objects.

Nucsafe, which is based in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and also has a manufacturing facility in Corbin, Ky., has expertise in gamma ray, neutron detection, and backscatter X-ray technology. AS&E, which was acquired by OSI in 2016, also has strong capabilities in backscatter X-ray technology.

Nucsafe breaks its product portfolio into four categories, including stationary continuous monitoring systems, transportable radiation monitoring systems, portable radiation search tools, and handheld instruments for search and radionuclide detection.  The company’s customers include the nuclear safeguards industry, law enforcement and federal agencies.

OSI’s existing radiation detection portfolio includes radiation portal monitors for vehicles, handheld detection devices, walk-through portals, backpack-based monitors, and related security management software.
