Westinghouse and Amentum signed a series of agreements aimed at advancing fleet-scale deployment of Westinghouse’s reactor technologies, the companies said Tuesday.
According to Westinghouse’s press release, the agreements enable the two companies to work together to develop Westinghouse’s large-scale reactor, AP1000, and small modular reactor (SMR), AP300.
Westinghouse’s APX strategy will focus on near-term global fleet development of the AP1000 reactor design, while working on commercialization of the AP300 SMR design, Westinghouse said. The two companies will work together to get Westinghouse’s AP300 SMR licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The AP1000, an advanced Generation III+ large-scale pressurized water reactor, has a generating capacity of nearly 1,100 megawatts. The AP300 SMR is a scaled down version of the AP1000 with a generating capacity of 300 megawatts.
Westinghouse’s APX reactor technology platform is based on its commercially operating AP1000 design, according to the release. The company is currently in the review process with NRC to renew the AP1000 design certification.
Amentum CEO John Heller said in the release his company will help provide expertise that spans “the full spectrum of the nuclear project lifecycle,” including engineering.
“There is an expanding global market for firm baseload power, and our collaboration with Westinghouse will enable us to help meet that demand,” Heller said.
These new agreements build on the two companies’ well-established partnership on several nuclear projects. Westinghouse and Amentum have worked on projects, such as reactor construction and decommissioning, in the United States, United Kingdom, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania and South Africa, according to the release.
