The Department of Energy and its prime contractor for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) will hold a community meeting next month in Hobbs, N.M.
The meeting by DOE and Becthel-led contractor Salado Isolation Mining Contractors is scheduled for Wednesday Aug. 5 starting at 3 p.m. Mountain Time at Hobbs City Hall, according to a notice from the DOE Office of Environmental Management.
The 90-minute session is expected to include an update on WIPP operations followed by a question-and-answer session with executives from the disposal facility near Carlsbad, N.M.
WIPP, the nation’s only deep underground disposal site for defense-related transuranic waste, has temporarily suspended burying waste while repairs are made to underground hoists at the facility. In addition, the New Mexico Environment Department is considering permit modifications designed to increase shipments to WIPP from legacy waste at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
