The deadline for a Genesis Mission solicitation was moved back to May 1 from April 28, according to the DOE Office of Science grants website.
The solicitation from March invited interested parties from national laboratories, universities and the commercial industry to submit proposals for a $293-million requisition for application (RFA) for the Genesis Mission. Broken up into phases, Phase 1, now accepting proposals until May 1, will support a nine-month project period and will range from $500,000 to $700,000.
Phase II applications are still due May 19.
Huntington Ingalls Industries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a third physical artificial intelligence company, Applied Intuition, Inc., on April 21 during the Navy League’s annual Sea-Air-Space expo.
The firm describes itself as a technology company that powers physical AI across industries to build foundational AI, simulation and operating systems that allow moving machines to perceive, decide and act intelligently.
The MoU sets up a framework for the companies to collaborate on advancing Applied Intuition’s Warship OS AI-defined operation systems that integrates data and AI “from bow to stern of maritime platforms, which is a powerful new offering under Vehicle OS for all domains,” HII said. HII said the partnership aims to improve ship performance, accelerate pathways for data and AI to every ship system and enable scalable autonomy.
Chantilly, Va.-based Amentum has hired two new vice presidents, one for investor relations and one for operations.
Charles Grant, a longtime executive with roots in the Navy nuclear program, has been selected as senior vice president of operations for Amentum, he said this week on his LinkedIn page. Separately, Amentum announced in an April 22 press release that Joseph DeNardi has joined the company as senior vice president and head of investor relations. DeNardi previously held senior level finance roles at Science Applications International, commonly known as SAIC, and understands the government services and defense sector, Amentum said in the release.
DeNardi replaces Nathan Rutledge who left the company to pursue other opportunities, according to the release. Grant, formerly vice president of operations for ABM Industries, joined Amentum upper management this month, he said this week on his LinkedIn profile page. Grant has also held management posts at Gulf States Toyota, Cox Automotive and GE Energy, according to his LinkedIn profile.
In recent years, work crews at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina have removed 640 tons of scrap metal and 617 tons of asbestos from the D Area, the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM) said last week.
Going back to the 1950s, facilities in the D Area made heavy water for nuclear reactors, EM said in an April 21 press release. Also, D Area was once home to coal-fired power generation for the site along the South Carolina-Georgia state line.
Since 2021, crews have been dismantling old structures and remediating the D Area for future development, the nuclear cleanup office said. To help ease the way for new development, contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions plans to install meteorological equipment at D Area to monitor weather patterns, the DOE office said in the release.
