Chantilly, Va.- based Amentum said July 23 it has won a contract, worth $85 million spread over three years, to design and overhaul key infrastructure for the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Program.
The work will take place at the Naval Reactors Facility located at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory, according to an Amentum press release. The work will “recapitalize the Navy’s spent fuel examination capabilities,” according to the release.
Among other things, the Idaho facility studies used fuel cores in an effort to predict and maximize real-world performance in the future, according to the release.
“This new project underscores Amentum’s commitment to supporting the design, engineering, and operational excellence required to sustain the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered fleet,” Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy & Environment business, said in the release. “By modernizing these vital examination capabilities, Amentum is helping to enhance the Navy’s ability to evaluate, optimize and extend the performance of nuclear fuel cores far into the future.”
The U.S. Navy’s nuclear fleet is made up of 11 active aircraft carriers and more than 70 submarines, according to the Amentum release.
