The BWX Technologies-led joint venture leading the liquid waste cleanup at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site awarded three subcontracts Tuesday that will handle future tank-side treated waste.
EnergySolutions, PermaFix and Waste Control Specialists were the three companies selected for the subcontracts, Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) said in its press release. The subcontractors will aid in disposal of tank-side treated waste from Hanford’s 200 West Area.
Additionally, H2C said the subcontracts will assist in the grouting efforts at the Hanford Site. Starting in 2027, the subcontractors will assist by grouting concentrate produced by the Effluent Management Facility and will support planning for more waste streams and transport approaches, according to the release.
H2C said these contracts will help establish commercial grouting competencies that can be added as cleanup continues to evolve.
“Successful cleanup requires the flexibility to apply the right solution to the right waste stream,” DOE’s Hanford Field Office Manager Ray Geimer said in the release. “These subcontract awards expand our options and strengthen our ability to safely manage treated waste as the mission progresses.”
